What does a Speech-Language Pathologist do?
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) assess and treat a range of speech, language, and communication difficulties across all age groups to help individuals improve their communication skills. Speech and language therapy evaluates and treats a variety of areas, including:
Speech sounds (e.g., articulation, phonology, motor speech)
Receptive and Expressive language skills (understanding and use of language)
Play skills
Social communication skills
Attention and listening
Fluency (e.g., stuttering)
Voice
Literacy skills (e.g., reading, spelling, writing)
Higher level language skills (e.g., problem solving, inferencing, reasoning, making predictions)
Feeding and Swallowing
If you have concerns about any of the above, don’t just “wait and see”! Earlier is better! Give us a call or send us an e-mail to ask for more information if you’re unsure. Remember: Early intervention is key!
At Speech Candy, we offer speech and language therapy services for children up to 13 years of age. We are also able to provide voice therapy for both children and adults.
What to expect on your first visit
Case History
Our therapists will first have a thorough conversation with you to learn more about your child’s speech and language development, family history of communication difficulties, as well as your concerns.
Initial Assessment
& Observations
Our therapists will then informally assess your child through play to determine the level of speech and language development they are currently at. We will also observe how you and your child interact and communicate during play.
* For older children, we may suggest administering formal assessments in addition to the above, which may take an additional 1 - 2 session(s) depending on the test, if necessary.
Results & Recommendations
After the assessment, we will share our findings and answer any questions you may have. We will provide recommendations on whether therapy is warranted and, if yes, the recommended frequency.
Goal Setting
Together, we will discuss and set individualized therapy goals for your child. Additionally, we’ll suggest strategies and activities you can implement at home to support and enhance your child’s communication skills.
